Merve grew up in a family of educators and always loved learning. After starting TEV Inanc Turkes High School in 2008, she experienced life changing effects of education based on research and inquiry. Her well-rounded high school education allowed her to study in the United States; she graduated from St. Olaf College with a BA degree in Political Science in 2017.
Through coursework in political science, economics, mathematics, philosophy and film, Merve explored the individual and social aspects of human rights, women’s rights, immigration, and identity politics. During various fellowships in Norway, Netherlands and Greece, she further realized the extent of privilege involved in her education, and started thinking about expanding quality education to all.
Upon graduating in 2017, she worked as a math tutor in a public high school in Chicago, where she experienced the impacts of education inequality along with her wonderful students. Her experience furthered her interest in education policy. Merve thinks everyone deserves quality education and hopes to contribute to the efforts in making it possible. Additionally, she likes to spend time with her friends, read Latin American literature, and listen to Balkan music.
