After completing her high school education at Robert College, Aysel received a double major degree in International Relations and Sociology from Johns Hopkins University. After staying a short period of time to study as a graduate student at Boğaziçi University on European Studies, she moved back to the United States and completed her Ph.D. in Sociology at the New School for Social Research. Aysel’s doctoral dissertation, working on sociology of religion and comparative-historical sociology, examines secularism in Turkey and India comparatively. After giving lectures on Sociology of Religion, Sociology of Law and Civil Society in various universities during and after his doctorate, he worked as a post-doctoral researcher at Sabancı University.
Aysel has been wanting to work in civil society since her college years. Aysel started to work as a Policy Analyst in the Educational Reform Initiative in 2016, specializing in matters such as religion and education, early childhood education, bilingualism and education, and education of refugee children.
She has a daughter called Yasemin and is married to a sociologist. She enjoys learning new things a lot and she likes to travel and do pilates in her spare time. She dreams of a world where everyone can express and develop oneself freely.
